SP Asks EDC Explain Bago Power Plant Shutdown (-2-03-11, VDS)

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Negros Occidental yesterday passed a resolution requesting the Energy Development Corp. to explain the shutting down of its geothermal power plant in Bago City, Negros Occidental.


Board Member Emilio Yulo III, chairperson of the SP Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, said he has received unconfirmed reports that EDC is going to stop its project in Brgy. Mailum, Bago City, since the steam it has generated is not enough.

They keep coming to Negros Occidental in search of mineral deposits, despite the Sangguniang Panlalawigan’s opposition to their entry into the province.


The Philmet Exploration Corp. has joined the list of mining companies, which informed the Sangguniang Panlalawigan yesterday of its mining exploration activities at the boundary of Binalbagan, Negros Occidental, and La Libertad, Negros Oriental. It covers 2,693 hectares.

Philex to Reopen Mines in Neg.Occ. (VDS, 01-24-11)

Philex Mining Corp. will resume its gold mining operations in Sipalay City and Hinobaan town in southern Negros Occidental within the year, Manuel Pangilinan, its chairman of the board and chief executive officer, said Saturday.


The area is a big source of gold, and opening of the mine will benefit the community in the area, he said.

Is Energy Development Corporation abandoning its North Negros Geothermal Project? Last week, the corporation announced that it decommissioned its power plant after completing studies on the plant's geothermal wells.
